Manager urges Callum Marshall to step up his game during loan at Huddersfield Town
Marshall, who is 20 years old and from Northern Ireland, joined Huddersfield in August. He hoped to gain important first-team experience and show what he can do. However, Duff’s recent comments indicate that Marshall has not yet met the team’s expectations.
In an interview with Yorkshire Live, Duff stressed the need for more goals from his forwards, including Marshall. He acknowledged that Marshall scored a late goal in a recent win but pointed out that the team cannot always depend on defenders to score from set pieces.
Duff stated, “It might sound like pressure, it is pressure. We can’t keep relying on centre-halves to score goals from set plays to win us games. I know Callum scored a goal right at the end, but there’s an expectancy, and at the minute it’s not quite landing.”
He added that the team has tried different combinations but needs to be more clinical. “We’re not always going to create that many chances, no matter who we play,” he said.
Marshall has shown some good moments during his time at Huddersfield. In 18 games, he has scored four goals and made two assists in less than 1,000 minutes of play. His best game was in the EFL Cup against Morecambe, where he scored and assisted in a 3-0 win.
Despite these flashes of talent, Duff is concerned about Marshall’s overall consistency. He has urged the young player to take his chances and make a bigger impact in matches.
Since joining West Ham’s youth academy in January 2022, Marshall has been developing steadily. He played a key role in the club’s 2023 FA Youth Cup win, scoring in the final against Arsenal. Earlier this year, he made his senior debut for West Ham in an FA Cup match, showing his potential.
With his contract lasting until 2027, West Ham has an important decision to make about Marshall’s future. They need to decide if he can be a valuable part of their long-term plans or if it would be better to sell him while his potential is high.
For now, Marshall will focus on responding to Duff’s challenge. He aims to prove his consistency and make a stronger case for his place at both Huddersfield and West Ham.
