Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana may miss up to 12 games due to a hamstring injury, impacting the team’s performance as they aim for the Premier League title.
Fofana was taken off the field in the 60th minute of the game, which Chelsea won 3-0 at Stamford Bridge. This season, the 23-year-old defender has played in every Premier League match except for one, which he missed due to suspension.
After the match, Maresca provided an update on Fofana’s condition. He said, “Unfortunately, it is bad news. It is a hamstring problem.” He explained that such injuries usually take three to five weeks to heal, meaning Fofana could miss a significant number of games.
Maresca expressed concern about losing Fofana, stating, “In the way he was playing, it is a big loss for us.” However, he also mentioned that the team has other players and will work to find solutions. He acknowledged that this is Fofana’s first injury of the season, which is fortunate given the number of games played.
Despite the injury, Chelsea remains in third place in the Premier League. They have the same points, goal difference, and goals scored as Arsenal, but are ranked lower alphabetically.
When asked about Chelsea’s chances of competing for the Premier League title this season, Maresca noted that many players on the team have limited experience in high-stakes matches. He pointed out that some players have only played in one final, which was the Carabao Cup final last season.
Maresca emphasized the importance of gaining experience in crucial moments. He believes that once the team starts to experience these moments, they will improve and be able to compete more effectively. He compared Chelsea’s situation to that of Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City, whose players have more experience in finals and title competitions.
He concluded by expressing optimism that Chelsea will soon be in a better position to compete with those clubs, but acknowledged that they still have work to do.
