Wout Weghorst’s comments on his substitution raise eyebrows after Ajax’s win over NEC, highlighting a clash between player preferences and coaching strategies in the Eredivisie.
Despite his impressive performance, Weghorst was taken off the field after 60 minutes. In his post-match interview, he openly criticized the decision made by manager Francesco Farioli. He expressed his confusion about being substituted while he was still scoring goals.
Weghorst stated, “If I were a coach and my striker had two goals in the 65th minute, I would never take him out.” His comments showed his frustration and highlighted a difference in opinion between him and the coach.
The 32-year-old forward mentioned that he had already talked to Farioli about this decision. He explained that he likes to play the full 90 minutes and push himself during games. This is something he has done throughout his career, and he feels he is missing that opportunity now.
He added, “Coming off is something that is new to me.” Weghorst emphasized that while he may not agree with the tactics, the team’s success is what matters most. Ajax is currently winning matches, and several players are performing well under the current strategy.
Looking ahead, Ajax will face FC Utrecht, who are in third place, in their next league match. The upcoming game will be crucial as they aim to maintain their strong position in the league.
