Tottenham Hotspur is considering Sunderland’s Anthony Patterson as a potential replacement for injured goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, with other options also being explored for the January transfer window.
Spurs need a new goalkeeper because Guglielmo Vicario is injured. Patterson, who is part of England’s youth teams, is seen as one of the best keepers outside the Premier League.
The club plans to keep an eye on Patterson for the rest of the year. They want to see if he could be a good emergency signing. Manager Ange Postecoglou wants another option in goal besides Fraser Forster.
Another goalkeeper, James Trafford from Burnley, is also being considered. Additionally, Yahia Fofana from Angers has caught their attention after some strong performances in Ligue 1.
Patterson might be the top choice because he has experience in English football. However, it is unclear if the 24-year-old would want to be a backup to Vicario in the future.
Other big clubs like Manchester United and Liverpool are also interested in Patterson. It is uncertain if Sunderland will be willing to sell their main goalkeeper in January.
So far this season, Patterson has played in 14 out of 18 Championship matches. He is crucial to Sunderland’s efforts to move up to the Premier League.
His performance is one reason Sunderland is currently fourth in the league, just five points behind Sheffield United, who are in first place.
Losing Patterson could be a big blow for Sunderland as they head into the second half of the season. Tottenham may need to consider other options if Patterson decides to stay with Sunderland.
He might want to finish the season with his current team before making any decisions about his future. Playing in the Premier League will likely be a priority for him in the 2025-26 season.
