The New Saints Fight for European Dream Despite Tough Losses

Shrewsbury: The New Saints, a football club from Wales, are determined to keep their European hopes alive. They have played 12 games in Europe this season and are eager for more. Manager Craig Harrison believes his team can still reach the knockout stages of the Conference League.

However, their chances took a hit after losing to Djurgarden from Sweden. This was their third defeat in the group stage, and it happened in Shrewsbury on Thursday. Despite the loss, the team showed they can compete with stronger clubs.

The New Saints have struggled to score goals, which puts them outside the playoff positions. They have two more matches left, starting with a tough game against Panathinaikos from Greece on December 12.

TNS made history by being the first Welsh club to reach the group stage of European competition. But they want more than just recognition. Manager Harrison stated, “We don’t want to let this go.” Their only points so far came from a home win against Astana.

Harrison is proud of his team’s performance against strong opponents. He believes they have shown they belong in this competition. “It gives us confidence and an opportunity,” he said. If they can win at least one of their remaining games, they could still advance.

The upcoming matches against Panathinaikos and Celje in Slovenia are crucial. Harrison knows it will be challenging but remains hopeful. He thinks the close losses could help with their goal difference.

“We will keep fighting,” he added. The New Saints are up against clubs that are used to European play. Many expected them to struggle, but the players have faith in themselves.

Captain Danny Redmond shares this belief. He said they have used the doubts of others as motivation. “We deserve to be here,” he stated. They know they must win to qualify, starting with the match against Panathinaikos.

Before focusing on Europe, TNS has a Welsh League Cup semi-final against Barry Town this weekend. They also have two more Cymru Premier games ahead. This season has been tough, as they have already lost four matches after going unbeaten last year.

Harrison acknowledges that competing in Europe has affected their preparation. Redmond added that being in Europe puts a target on their back. Other teams want to beat them, but they are ready to show their strength.

“Nothing changes for us. We will keep fighting,” Redmond concluded.
