La Liga’s president speaks out against piracy involving Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr.
During the conference, Tebas mentioned Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. He connected him to an incident during a Champions League match between Liverpool and Real Madrid. Tebas pointed out that the game was being watched illegally in Spain, indicating that piracy was involved.
He explained that to watch the Champions League match legally in Spain, viewers need a subscription to Movistar Television, the official broadcaster. He stated, “If it is in Madrid, and I think it was in Madrid, it is piracy. Access to the content to watch the Champions League in Spain has to be through Movistar Television.”
Some viewers, including Vinicius, reportedly watched the game through unauthorized methods. They used VPNs or satellite dishes aimed at other countries to avoid Movistar’s restrictions. Tebas said, “To watch that content you had to have a VPN, or a satellite dish directed elsewhere. There has to be an active conduct outside the scope of Movistar.”
He added, “He was pirating the match. It has been communicated that next time they will not pirate the match.” Tebas made it clear that such actions are considered piracy and warned that anyone involved would face consequences.
He specifically mentioned an Instagram story from Vinicius. In the post, the player shared an image from the match that showed the logo of TNT Sports Brasil, a Brazilian broadcaster. This raised concerns about the illegal sharing of broadcast content, which could harm the league and its broadcasters.
In response, LaLiga is believed to have sent a formal warning to Real Madrid. They urged the club to address the situation. However, it is not expected that the club will take any immediate action regarding Vinicius’ involvement.
