Nice’s hopes for the Europa League are fading after a heavy defeat to Rangers.
The match started with Nice showing some promise. Tom Louchet made a strong attempt that forced Rangers’ goalkeeper Jack Butland to make a big save. However, Nice’s hopes for a penalty were dashed when VAR overturned the decision. This was the highlight of the night for Nice, as things quickly went downhill from there.
Rangers took the lead when Vaclav Cerny’s shot deflected off two Nice players, confusing goalkeeper Marcin Bulka. Just three minutes later, Mohamed Diomandé scored after a mistake by Pablo Rosario, doubling Rangers’ lead. This left Nice feeling deflated and unable to recover.
The situation worsened for Nice when Mohamed Abdelmonem made a poor back-pass. Hamza Igamane intercepted it, rounded Bulka, and scored Rangers’ third goal just before halftime. The Allianz Riviera crowd expressed their frustration as Nice’s chances of European qualification slipped away.
Igamane scored again in the second half, sealing the game for Rangers. He intercepted another pass from Rosario and curled the ball into the net. The second half felt more like a practice session for Rangers, while Badredine Bouanani managed to score a late goal for Nice, giving the home fans a small reason to cheer.
This result leaves Nice in a difficult position. Coach Franck Haise stated that they have no room for mistakes. With three games left, they need to win all of them to have any chance of qualifying, as they currently sit near the bottom of the Europa League standings. Rangers, on the other hand, are in eighth place.
