Danny Murphy criticizes Joelinton’s lack of effort in Newcastle’s draw with Crystal Palace, highlighting missed opportunities and poor decision-making during the match.
Newcastle initially took the lead in the game thanks to an own goal by Marc Guehi in the 53rd minute. However, they could not hold on to their advantage, as Daniel Munoz scored an equalizer in the fourth minute of stoppage time.
Despite taking the lead, Newcastle’s overall performance was lackluster. They managed only one shot throughout the match, with none on target. In contrast, Crystal Palace had 16 attempts, showing a clear difference in attacking play.
Newcastle struggled with their crossing accuracy during the game. Both teams made 22 crossing attempts, but Crystal Palace succeeded with seven of theirs, while Newcastle only managed to connect with two, which is just 9%.
Joelinton, who played on the wing, was particularly criticized for his poor crossing. He failed to find his teammates with three attempts, including one that went out of play despite having players available for a pass.
Murphy pointed out this moment as an example of Joelinton’s laziness. He suggested that instead of making a more thoughtful play, Joelinton opted for an easier option, which did not help the team.
Murphy explained that decision-making is just as important as technical skills when playing in advanced positions. He noted that Joelinton had a chance to make a simple cross but chose not to, resulting in a poor delivery.
He remarked on the lack of urgency in Joelinton’s play, stating that the cross was high and ineffective, with only two players in the box to receive it. Murphy emphasized that Newcastle has shown they can be dynamic and score goals, but this performance was far from that standard.
