Neversink Mountain Fire: Late Friday night on Neversink Mountain in Reading, Berks County, Pennsylvania, a sizable brush fire erupted. Starting about 11:30 p.m., the fire swiftly spread over the neighborhood and caused local residents to flee.
Safety Issues and Exchanges from Vacuations
Parts of South 18th and 19th Streets in Reading and surrounding areas—including Ganter Lane and Neversink Mountain Road in Lower Alsace Township—have evacuation orders issued by authorities. The evacuated residents are being urged to move to Amanda E. Stout Elementary School on South 10th Street in Reading.
Despite the evacuation notice, one resident decided to remain in her house. “If it gets close where it’s going to jeopardize my granddaughter and our life, I will [leave],” she said expressing her worries. Simply said, though, it is unfair.”
Firemen Fight to Stifle the Blaze.
Miles around the area, smoke can be seen and smelled as firefighters keep trying to contain the flames. Concerns for nearby homes and animals have been raised by the obvious ring the fire has formed around Neversink Mountain. As of right now, no injuries have been recorded; the reason of the fire is still unknown.
Community Noted Burn Ban Reminder
A countywide burn ban is in place to help stop more fires resulting from current dry weather. To lower fire risks, authorities counsel residents to clear around their homes dry brush, dead plants, firewood, and other flammable items.
