Milan has confirmed that defender Matteo Gabbia will stay with the team until 2029.
Since his return, Gabbia has become a regular player in the team’s defense. He has made eight appearances this season in both Serie A and the Champions League. His strong performances earned him a call-up to the Italian national team.
Gabbia’s season could have been even better. He scored a goal in the 2-1 victory over Inter in the Derby della Madonnina on September 22. However, he missed a month of play due to a muscle injury.
To announce the contract extension, Milan shared a playful image of Gabbia in a cage. The term “locked down” was used because Gabbia translates to “cage” in Italian.
Gabbia recently celebrated his 25th birthday. He has played 84 competitive matches for Milan at the senior level, scoring five goals and providing one assist.
Reports suggest that Gabbia’s new contract will increase his salary to €2.2 million per season. This is nearly double what he was earning before. His previous contract was set to end in June 2026, and he was making around €1 million per season.
