Former Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri reflects on his decision to leave the club, admitting it was a mistake despite his successes.
Despite these accomplishments, Sarri’s style of play, known as “Sarri-ball,” did not resonate well with many Chelsea fans. After his time at Chelsea, he moved to Juventus in 2020. Chelsea supported his decision to leave, appointing Frank Lampard as his successor while facing a transfer ban.
In his recent comments, Sarri revealed that he felt uncertain about the club’s internal situation, which influenced his choice to return to Italy. He stated, “I could have stayed at Chelsea. I wanted to come back to Italy because the situation at Chelsea was not easy.” He mentioned that his only point of contact was Marina Granovskaia, and the absence of a sporting director made things unclear for him.
Sarri reflected on his time at Chelsea, noting that despite some tough matches, including heavy losses to Manchester City and Bournemouth, he had a good experience overall. He said, “We got third place in the Premier League table, reached the final of the Carabao Cup, and won the Europa League.”
He acknowledged that the inconsistent performances might have contributed to the fans’ dissatisfaction with his management. Sarri believes that if Chelsea managed to secure a top-four finish, it would indicate that his style of football was effective.
Looking ahead, Sarri is open to returning to management and has not ruled out a comeback in England. However, with Chelsea currently performing well under their new manager, Enzo Maresca, it seems unlikely that he will return to Stamford Bridge anytime soon. Sarri’s reflections highlight the complexities of football management and the challenges faced by coaches in high-pressure environments.
