Manchester City is preparing to rebuild its team as performance struggles continue this season.
Several players left the club, including Julian Alvarez, who moved to Atletico Madrid for €95 million. Sergio Gomez transferred to Real Sociedad, and Joao Cancelo joined Al Hilal, ending a difficult time at City. With the team currently on a six-game winless streak, fans are questioning if a major squad overhaul is necessary soon.
According to Sam Lee from The Athletic, Manchester City plans to rebuild the squad in 2025 instead of 2024. There was much discussion about not replacing Julian Alvarez after his departure. Guardiola believed they had enough midfield options to fill that gap.
As the club prepares for a significant change, they will also say goodbye to their successful director of football after 12 years. It is unclear who will lead the team’s revival. Sam Lee reports that Begiristain will make decisions until next summer, while Hugo Viana will learn the role alongside him.
Starting next summer, Viana is expected to take over. The two will likely work together to prepare for the 2025/26 season. Currently, it is uncertain who the team will target for transfers next year. However, there is a strong belief that strengthening the defensive midfield is a top priority.
Rodri’s injury in September has left the team without their key player for possibly the entire season. This has led to increased interest in finding a replacement for him in January. Looking ahead, Manchester City may also seek creative midfielders as they prepare for Kevin De Bruyne’s eventual departure. Additionally, many believe the full-back and attacking positions need attention as well.
