A new proposal could force Manchester City to change its ownership structure if approved.
La Liga president Javier Tebas has been one of the main critics. He argues that Manchester City should face serious consequences for alleged financial issues. In response, City Chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak defended the club in 2022. He emphasized the importance of focusing on facts rather than rumors.
Now, there is a push in the government to change the rules regarding club ownership. Labour peer Lord Bassam of Brighton has proposed an amendment to the Football Governance Bill. This amendment aims to prevent clubs owned by state funds from competing in English football.
If this amendment passes, it would mean significant changes for Manchester City and Newcastle United. Both clubs would need to find new ownership to comply with the new regulations. The proposal is currently being discussed in the House of Lords.
However, for the amendment to become law, it must also be approved by the House of Commons. Insiders suggest that the chances of this happening are low.
Recently, Pep Guardiola praised Manchester City’s ownership, particularly Sheikh Mansour. He credited their investment as a key factor in the club’s success over the past 15 years. Guardiola highlighted the contributions of everyone involved in the club’s journey to the top.
The situation remains uncertain as discussions continue. The outcome of the proposal could have a lasting impact on Manchester City and the broader football landscape in England.
