Virgil van Dijk played a key role in Liverpool’s 2-0 win against Manchester City, showcasing his defensive skills and leadership despite not scoring any goals during the match.
Liverpool controlled the match for most of the time, putting pressure on the defending champions. Manchester City is now struggling, having not won in their last seven games, including four losses in the Premier League.
Cody Gakpo scored the first goal in the 12th minute, finishing a great pass from Mohamed Salah. Salah later secured the win with a penalty in the 78th minute.
Liverpool could have scored more goals, as they missed several chances to increase their lead. Van Dijk himself had a few opportunities but missed a free header in the 19th minute.
Despite these missed chances, Van Dijk’s defensive work was impressive. He made seven clearances to keep Manchester City from scoring. He also had three interceptions, one recovery, two blocks, and one tackle.
At 33 years old, Van Dijk showed he still has what it takes. He won three out of four aerial duels and four out of seven overall duels. He was also accurate with his passing, misplacing only three out of 37 attempts.
There was a tense moment late in the game when Van Dijk lost the ball to Kevin De Bruyne. Fortunately, goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher was there to help out and prevent any trouble.
Former Manchester United player Gary Neville praised Van Dijk’s performance, calling him a “giant” on Sky Sports. He even named Van Dijk as the Man of the Match for his outstanding display.
Liverpool aims to keep their winning streak alive as they prepare to face Newcastle on Wednesday. They will also visit Goodison Park for their next league match next weekend.
