Liverpool is considering a surprising transfer for PSG’s Gianluigi Donnarumma, raising questions about their current goalkeeping situation and future plans.
Donnarumma has had a successful career in Europe, but his performance has not been as strong since he left AC Milan for PSG. Recently, there has been significant interest in him, especially since his contract talks have stalled, according to Gazzetta dello Sport.
This situation has caught the attention of Liverpool and Manchester City, even though Liverpool already has Alisson and Caoimhin Kelleher competing for the starting goalkeeper role. Kelleher has been outstanding since Alisson’s injury, and he might keep his spot ahead of the more experienced Brazilian.
Additionally, Liverpool has Giorgi Mamardashvili set to join next summer. A deal was made for him to stay with Valencia for one more season. This raises the question of whether Liverpool really needs Donnarumma.
If both Kelleher and Alisson were to leave when Mamardashvili arrives, it could create an opportunity for Donnarumma to join the team. However, it seems unlikely that either Mamardashvili or Donnarumma would want to come to Liverpool just to sit on the bench.
Both goalkeepers are talented enough to start for many top teams, which could create a problem for Liverpool if they both joined. Fans might prefer to keep Kelleher as the number one choice after his impressive performances lately.
Alisson still has a role to play for Liverpool, even if he is getting older. It might be wise for the club to consider bringing in a long-term option for the starting goalkeeper position instead of adding more competition.
