Norwich: Daniel Farke was adored by fans during his time at Norwich City. When the game ended at Carrow Road, Blur’s classic song “Parklife” would play, but the fans changed the lyrics to celebrate Farke.
At Leeds United, however, Farke has the highest win rate of any coach with over ten games, yet he doesn’t receive the same love. His name is rarely chanted, and fans seem indifferent rather than angry about his tactics.
After a recent match, the stands at Elland Road were not full. Leeds had just won against Luton Town and were at the top of the league with ten victories. Still, the fans’ feelings towards Farke resemble a passionless relationship.
Farke’s strategy has made Leeds more defensively solid, allowing fewer goals than last year. They have the lowest expected goals allowed in the league, focusing on controlling the game with possession and two defensive midfielders.
However, this strong defense lacks excitement. Fans are frustrated by the lack of thrilling, attacking football, especially given the quality of the squad.
Leeds boasts one of the most expensive squads in the English Football League, and fans expect victories. The disappointment of not being in the Premier League for years adds to their frustrations, even after a brief return.
The lingering memory of Marcelo Bielsa, a coach who made football feel like art, casts a long shadow over Elland Road. While Farke’s approach may be effective, it doesn’t align with what fans desire.
Farke may never receive the same adoration as Bielsa, but if he manages to lead Leeds back to the Premier League, his name may once again be celebrated.
