AC Milan has extended Matteo Gabbia’s contract, showing trust in his skills and future.
He returned to the team in January 2024 after spending time on loan at Lucchese and Villarreal. Since coming back, the 25-year-old has played regularly in the defense, appearing in eight matches this season in Serie A and the Champions League. His strong performances also led to a call-up to the Italian national team.
Gabbia faced a setback with a muscle injury that kept him out for a month. However, he made a significant impact by scoring a key goal in Milan’s 2-1 win over Inter Milan on September 22. This goal showed how important he has become to the team under coach Stefano Pioli.
Milan shared the news of his contract extension in a fun way on social media. They posted a picture of Gabbia in a cage, playing on the meaning of his last name, which translates to “cage” in Italian.
The new contract is said to double his previous salary. Gabbia will now earn around €1.8 million each season, plus bonuses, up from about €1 million. His last contract was set to end in 2026.
The club praised Gabbia’s dedication and how well he fits with Milan’s values. They stated, “AC Milan is delighted to announce that Matteo Gabbia has renewed his contract until 30 June 2029. Born in 1999, Matteo has worn the Rossoneri shirt since he was 12, and his determination and contribution, both on and off the pitch, deeply align with the club’s values.”
Gabbia has played 84 matches for Milan, scoring five goals and providing one assist. His steady growth shows his commitment and ability to perform in important games, including the Champions League and key Serie A matches.
Having just turned 25, Gabbia has been part of Milan’s system for over ten years. His new contract reflects the club’s belief in his potential and their desire for a long-term partnership.
With Gabbia secured for another five years, Milan has ensured a dependable player in their defense as they aim for success both in Italy and Europe.
