Milan’s coach talks about team performance and player strategies before facing Empoli.
Fonseca explained that the team was more organized against Juventus but performed better in transitions against Slovan Bratislava. He noted that when they improve in one area, new problems often arise. Winning does not mean they can ignore issues; they must address them.
He pointed out that problems can appear in every game. The team showed good discipline against Juventus, while they were more effective in transitions against Bratislava. Despite concerns about their defense, he highlighted that they have one of the best defenses in the league, having conceded the same number of goals as Inter and Lazio.
Fonseca also mentioned the possibility of using two forwards in the lineup again, similar to their earlier match against Inter. He said this strategy would depend on the situation. He believes that having different attacking styles is important, especially when facing teams like Empoli and Atalanta.
He acknowledged that it is challenging to control every game in Serie A. Fonseca emphasized the need for balance, where the team can create chances while maintaining defensive strength. After taking the lead in Bratislava, they conceded an equalizer, which affected the team’s morale.
Regarding Leao, Fonseca shared that he tried two different strategies with him. One worked well, and he is pleased with Leao’s response. However, he wants consistency from him, as the team needs that version of Leao to succeed.
When asked about the lack of a stable defensive pairing, Fonseca explained that while he has some stability, the number of games and injuries makes it hard to keep the same players. He acknowledged the importance of having consistent defenders but noted the challenges they face.
Finally, he admitted that he is concerned about the team’s position in the league but remains optimistic about their future.
