Frank Lampard’s return to management at Coventry could lead to Chelsea signings.
Lampard has experience in the Championship, having led Derby County to a play-off final in 2019. During his time at Derby, he borrowed players from Chelsea, including Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori, who both had successful spells there. Now, as he takes charge at Coventry, he might seek similar help from Chelsea.
One player who could join Coventry is Alex Matos. The 20-year-old midfielder has played a few games for Chelsea’s development team this season. He made his debut for Chelsea in October 2023 and was later loaned to Huddersfield Town, where he played 19 matches and scored once. With Coventry needing more midfield options, Matos could find a good opportunity to play regularly under Lampard.
Another potential signing is Leo Castledine, who has impressed while on loan at Shrewsbury Town. He has played 13 games and scored two goals this season. If Shrewsbury continues to struggle, Chelsea might recall him and send him to Coventry instead. Castledine could add energy to Coventry’s midfield and learn from Lampard.
Harvey Vale is another young talent who could be useful for Coventry. He has played in different positions, including as a wing-back. Vale was linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League but stayed with Chelsea’s development squad. If Lampard wants a versatile player, Vale could fit the bill, although his contract situation might complicate a loan move.
Samuel Rak-Sakyi is also a name to consider. He has played for Chelsea’s first team this season and could provide depth for Coventry. His brother is on loan at Sheffield United, which could lead to an interesting matchup later in the season. Rak-Sakyi’s skills might help him earn a spot in Lampard’s starting lineup.
Lastly, Deivid Washington has shown promise in Chelsea’s development squad. He was close to moving to Strasbourg and Hull City but those deals fell through. If Coventry decides to play with two strikers, Washington could be a great addition alongside Ellis Simms. His experience could help strengthen Coventry’s attack as they aim to avoid relegation.
