Chef Tobias: In Hyattsville, Maryland, celebrity chef and former NFL player Tobias Dorzon is recovering from a violent robbery attempt. Dorzon and a female companion were returning home from a night out Tuesday night when they were shot.
Dorzon and his companion were ambushed by four semiautomatic-wielding men outside their rideshare vehicle. The suspects exited a sunroof-equipped white SUV and fired multiple shots without requesting anything. Dorzon and his companion were shot but were expected to recover.
Dorzon is a famous chef and former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tennessee Titans running back. He won Maryland’s “Chef of the Year” award for his Hyattsville restaurants, Huncho House and 1123 by Chef Tobias. Dorzon is well-liked in the community for his Food Network and ESPN appearances and in sports and culinary circles.
Councilmember Wanika Fisher, who represents the area, expressed her sadness and frustration, calling the attack “senseless.” She wished both victims a speedy recovery and promised justice to the attackers. “I look forward to seeing Chef Dorzon back in the kitchen soon,” Fisher said.
The gunmen opened fire immediately after exiting their vehicle, according to neighborhood surveillance footage. One attacker robs Dorzon as he lies on the ground pleading for his life, according to the video. A neighbor who heard the gunshots comforted the victims until help arrived.
Police are investigating and have described the suspects. One carried a short-barreled rifle and all four wore black hooded jackets. Law enforcement wants anyone with information to help find the suspects.
Dorzon and his companion have community support despite the trauma. Locals and foodies love Dorzon’s West African-Italian cuisine in Hyattsville.
Hyattsville residents and Chef Tobias fans hope for his quick recovery and safe return to the kitchen as authorities investigate this violent incident.
