Manager Jimmy Thelin was disappointed with the loss against St Mirren and the poor defense that led to a draw with Hibernian. The team’s overall performance in these matches, including a draw against Hearts, has not been up to standard. They will need to improve, especially with goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov out for about six weeks.
Realistically, Aberdeen is not expected to challenge for the title this season. Their best chance in recent years was when Derek McInnes competed with Ronny Deila, and Rangers were not in the league.
Despite this, the start of the season has been impressive for the Dons. They have not begun a campaign this well since they last lifted the title, which was a significant achievement.
The draws at Easter Road and Tynecastle are not bad results overall, and there is still much to build on at Pittodrie. Remarkably, they are just four points off their position in 1984 at this time of year.
On Wednesday, they will face a Celtic team that has started the season strongly. This is Celtic’s best start since 2016 when they went unbeaten in the domestic league. Their recent win over Ross County has put them in a strong position historically.
Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has been able to rest several key players, including Auston Trusty and Kyogo Furuhashi, against Ross County. These high-value players are expected to return for the match at Pittodrie.
Before their League Cup semi-final, Aberdeen had to deal with tough matches against Rangers and Hearts. This shows the challenge not only for Aberdeen but for all teams in the league as they prepare for a tough encounter with Celtic in the Granite City.
